WHY FORESTS MATTER
We All Need Forests to Live
People depend on forests to live. They filter the water we drink and the air we breathe. Worldwide, 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods, including food, clothing, or shelter.
Forests are home to nearly half of the world's species, including some of the most endangered birds and mammals, such as orangutans, gorillas, pandas, Northern Spotted Owls and Marbled Murrelets.
Deforestation and forest degradation is the second leading cause of carbon pollution, causing 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
Our forests give us many things like books, tissues, furniture and so much more. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife who call them home.
FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests.
WHAT IS FSC?
FSC runs a global forest certification system with two key components:
FSC also licenses retailers and other end users to promote FSC labelled products, without holding FSC certification.
The FSC system allows businesses and consumers to identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products made with materials from well-managed forests and/or recycled sources.
